Situations (1998-2000)

The "Situations" series of prints were de la Serra's first suite of purely photographic works, after her collaboration with Hertz on the "Deadpan" series of digitally generated images. A fascination with the recurrence of topological divisions within the picture plane appears to unify these works compositionally,while a heightened naturalism informs the content. As witness to this latter tendency, consider the exaggerated moistness of the rock in the "Lichen" print, or the coloration of the deep shadows in the solarized "Hillside" print.
